-election, with their convention set to be gaveled to order in just one hour. first lady michele obama caps the opening night with a speech that will talk about the president's connection with and support for the middle class. a theme that the president himself anticipated earlier today at a rally in norfolk, virginia, where he drew a sharp contrast with his republican rival, mitt romney. >> i mean, think about it. a plan that says we're going to make middle-class families pay for another budget-busting, $250,000 tax cut, for people making $3 million a year or more, that's not really persuasive to most people. >> while the president was delivering that line, mitt romney's been up in vermont this afternoon, working on his powers of persuasion, fine tuning his debate preparations and leaving hatchet man paul ryan to do the dirty work on the campaign trail as today in battleground ohio. >> the biggest threat to medicare is obama care and one of the biggest threats to job creation is obama care. so for the sake of medicare, and for the sake of jobs, we are going to repeal and replace obama care. >> what a line.

for him to do much better than the headliner last night. first lady michelle obama who offered a personal perspective on the values that guide her husband every day in the white house. >> for barack, these issues aren't political. they are personal. barack knows the american dream because he's lived it. and he wants everyone in this country, everyone, to have the same opportunity no matter who we are or where we are from or what we look like or who we love. >> if the first lady michelle obama sought to reignite the flame for the president earlier, massachusetts governor deval patrick aimed to reinvigorate the fight. challenging supporters to stand with the president against attacks on everything from his foreign policy to health care reform. >> if we want to win elections in november and keep our country moving forward, if we want to earn the privilege to lead, my message is this. it is time for democrats to grow a backbone and stand up for what we believe! >> that fiery speech raised the bar important those that followed. but it was keynote speaker san antonio mayor julian castro that to

at the speeches this week, let's remember bill clinton had to follow michelle obama, which was a phenomenal speech, martin. that was as great a speech experience as you could ask for in a convention hall, and people are wondering, how can he follow that? he didn't attempt to top it. he did something different. he did a completely different thing as he so obviously would. so what i think happened was we saw michelle obama hit a home run, and then we saw bill clinton hit a home run, and nobody cares whether this home run went over the centerfield wall or the left field wall or right field. these are home runs, martin. these are just incredible performances, and i think barack obama's going to come in here tonight, and he's going to own this night. he's going to own this convention, own this group. and i really think he is now in control of the campaign the rest of the way when he leaves shar the lo. >> lawrence, the final question to you. how does the quality of speeches at this convention compare with last week in tampa. please stop yourself from laughing, lawrence. >> i actually think for the case

and especially the democratic brand after we saw michelle obama give that amazie ingamazi stirring speech. it was like going to church and then what barack obama did and what bill clinton did versus the todd akin wing of the party? >> absolutely. toure and goldie taylor, i'm sorry to cut short your enthusiasm, but we've run out of time. thank you, both. >>> next, team romney ripped to shreds over their foreign policy. stay with us. >> folks, sarah palin said she could see russia from alaska. mitt romney talks like he's only seen russia by watching rocky iv. >> i think he diminished himself by even mentioning my name. how does he even know my name? but that doesn't mean we should be penalized for it. that's why liberty mutual insurance policies come standard with accident forgiveness, if you qualify. learn more at libertymutual.com. now we need a little bit more... a little bit more vanilla? this is great! and there is first lady, michelle obama. at and on the stage of the democratic national convention in charlotte, preparing for the speech that she will deliver tomorrow. delegates have been gathering in large numbers already outside the actual convention hall, but there she is, being given directions as to where to speak and a microphone and obviously the telepromter stands as well. and her husband, the president, well, he was out in ohio where he wished a happy labor day to auto workers in toledo and everyone working hard each and other day as he pushed his role in securing the auto bailout that kept the assembly lines running. >> ohio, we're not about to take a knee and do nothing. we're not going to let detroit go bankrupt or lordstown or toledo. i stood with american workers, american -- i'll make that bet any day of the week and because of that bet, three years later, that bet is paying off for america! >> the toledo rally is part of the president's pregame tour gearing up for the democratic national convention starting tomorrow in charlotte, north carolina. first lady, live there on the s

will be on "the view" with michelle obama we understand. >> very frightening broadcast that mitt romney is too terrified to appear on, yes. i know the show. >> yes. i'll pass that along. and tuesday is the big speech before the united nations general assembly where foreign policy obviously is going to be front and center. there's also an appearance at the clinton global initiative while he's in new york on tuesday. and then wednesday the campaign just announced a trip to another swing state of ohio where the president has been, martin, our producer at the white house informs me just moments ago that this will be his 13th trip, his 28th to ohio, the swing state, since becoming president. obviously a big focus there. he's opened up, according to our most recent poll, a 50% to 43% advantage, and what really has to be considered a must-win state for mitt romney. >> indeed. finally, mike, i wanted to mention mitt romney has not just released his tax returns, he's released his physical, and he's also chucked out a white paper on housing. so this is incredible. anything to divert attention from the 4

of security since he was debating against einsteinian figures as herman cain and michele bachmann? >> i'm sure they know the difference between rick perry and mitt romney in debate prep. they're not taking this for granted. he's done all this prep. obama was not great in the '08 debates and romney was not great in the 2012 debates, so there's room for both of these guys for improvement and i expect they're both studying hard to make sure they can do the best they can. i don't think they think michele bachmann and barack obama is similar in skill. >> thank goodness for that. gentlemen, thank you so much. >> thanks. >>> we'll be back to clear the air. hungry for the best? it's eb. want to give your family the very best in taste, freshness and nutrition? it's eb. eggland's best. better taste. better nutrition. better eggs. it's eb. want to try to crack it? yeah, that's the way to do it! now we need a little bit more... a little bit more vanilla? this is great! he has to land some punches. obama just has to get out alive. >> michelle, in your latest article for the daily beast, you say that the stakes could not be higher as mike was saying for mr. romney. in fact, you say that unless mr. romney hits it out of the park on wednesday, his dreams of sitting in the oval office could be, i'm quoting you, deader than disco. couldn't he come back in week two, much as people like me who love nothing more than hearing the ojs or the temptations even today. >> it's not mee who thinks that denver is a do or die situation. we're talking about republicans who have been out there saying he really has to nail this. people have been waiting for him to have his break-through moment. there are very few opportunities going forward. republican donors and republican -- other elected officials are getting very nervous, and if he doesn't make a great showing in denver, it's going to be trouble for him, and the problem is his team has raised expectations really high. beth my esmth rs memo is a complete turn around from before when they were saying we're going to
